I – The Magician Tarot Card
“Ooh, he’s a magic man mama… he’s got the magic hands…” We’re not sure this is exactly what Heart meant in their hit song, but it’s a fitting description for The Magician tarot card. In the Deviant Moon tarot, he has a hand for each element of the tarot cards: cups, sword, pentacles and wands and in more traditional decks, they sit on the altar in front of him. The Magician represents the beginning of the process of individuation, or as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell would have said, the first step on the Hero’s Journey we all take, in our own way.
Where The Fool was a trickster, playing pranks, The Magician takes his art very seriously. We are, after all, talking about the art of alchemy, right? The journey is about taking the base metal or material and turning it into spiritual gold. This path will be rocky, forging the precious metal from inside us, but that is really what the tarot represents.
These tarot cards don’t just stand alone, but are put into a sequence that tells our universal story. The Magician is Morpheus in The Matrix, sent to free our mind and show us the way to release the spirit encased in all our physical matter. Only then can we truly understand the principle of “As above, so below,” perfectly illustrated in the Rider-Waite tarot. The Magician tarot card can show you the door, but only you can walk through and begin your spiritual journey.
Have faith, trust your intuition and seek answers from within. Everything you need to navigate this journey is already inside you.
“Out of other things thou wilt never make the One, until thou has first become One thyself.”
