Eight of Cups

The good news is the Eight of Cups represents a fresh start and a change, but the bad news is there’s an element of sadness associated with walking away from everything, as this tarot card represents. There is often a retreat into solitude to regroup while starting on a new path or creating a new life.

While this may feel like a sad time, it’s important to remember this purge is necessary to clear the way for something better. The man in the card is set on a rugged coastline, but the waters are calm. Walking away brings some loss and melancholy, but also some peace. Think of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars when he leaves his aunt and uncle’s farm after their murders, but he’s pursuing his true destiny after a horrific loss.

If this card is negatively aspected in a reading it could indicate aimless wandering without purpose or abandonment.
