VII – The Chariot Tarot Card

The song may say “Swing low, sweet chariot, comin’ for to carry me home,” but The Chariot tarot card is coming to carry you away from home on a great adventure. This is the last of the first tier of seven cards of the journey, starting after The Fool, and it marks the beginning of the journey into the toughest section of the tarot cards.

This Chariot is more like the one of the Greek god Helios, who drives the chariot carrying the sun across the sky every day. One of his stories involves his mortal son, Phaethon, who demanded that his father allow him to drive his sun chariot across the sky for a day. As a mere mortal (and kind of a spoiled brat), Phaethon lost control of the chariot’s horses, and they ran rampant across the skies till Zeus struck Phaethon dead.

If you’re going to take a ride in The Chariot, make sure you keep control the reins and the horses because once you let them loose and give them free rein, you won’t be able to rein them and again. This is a cautionary tale and a cautionary card.

“Valor lies just halfway between rashness and cowardice.”

Cervantes

You can triumph, but with you’ll have to work for it and play it smart, keeping a cool head. Whatever internal conflict you may have will need to be managed or resolved to focus on the potential success at hand. With the proper control and a strong grip on the reins, you can ride The Chariot tarot card to victory like Ben Hur.
